Try to remember that most of us are running Leopard here and from time to time you will find something different on your computer. Think it through before you post.

I will repeat what I already said because I just tested it again. In
System Profiler, I could hear all the information for hardware overview, including the serial number, without interacting. However, in order to isolate the specific serial number line and move by word and character, I
DID have to interact with hardware overview. I am running the latest
version of Leopard. What does or does not work on Tiger or on somebody
else's machine I can't say.
