[macvoiceover] Translating a file into braille with Louis and Voiceover--A Quick Guide

Translating a file into braille with Louis and Voiceover--A Quick Guide

The Louis Braille Translator is free and can be downloaded from:

http://w3.wmcnet.org/braille/louis/

This guide will make it possible for you to translate a file in Grade 2 braille at 40 cells per line and 25 lines per page. Detailed information on these factors and others such as selecting braille tables, languages and so on can be found under the Louis Help menu.

Here is a step by step process for translating a file into braille:

1: Open the Louis translator.

2: Press, command-o which will open a new window. You should hear, "choose file to translate.

3: Using VO keys and the right arrow, press them until you hear, "sidebar list". At this point, move up and down in the sidebar list with the up and down arrow keys until you hear the name of the folder where the file that you want to translate is located, for example documents.

4: Using the tab key, you should just need to tap it once until you hear "file browser.

5: Now while you are on the file browser, you can move up and down in the file browser with the up and down arrow keys until you hear the name of the file that you wish to translate, or if you wish, you can type the first few letters of the name of the file until you hear the name of the file spoken and then press enter.

6: Using the tab key again, tab until you hear, "save braille file as button" and then press the space bar.

7: ***now this is important! You should hear "save braille file as". Type the name of your file with no spaces and no extension. This is important, because if you put spaces in the file name, it may not translate correctly.

8: Once you have typed the name of your braille file, press enter. Note: the translated file will be placed in the same folder as the original file.

9: Now using the VO keys and the right arrow, move to the processing tab and press VO keys and the space bar.

10: Using VO keys and the down arrow key, move down until you hear, "Run translation button and press VO keys and the space bar. Your file is now being translated. In a few seconds, or several seconds, depending on the size of the file being translated, you will hear a computer sound and Voiceover will speak a message telling you that your translation is complete. At this point, using VO keys and the right arrow key, press these keys until you hear "ok", and press VO keys and the space bar.

Now you can go to the folder where the file you translated is located, and as well as your original file, you should find a new file with a .brl extension.

You will find that as you use Louis more and more that there are many ways to customize your documents, however in this guide we have used only defaults.
