[macvoiceover] The scoop on readiris 12

I payed my $40 and installed readers 12. As Russell has already mentioned, opening the app gives "no windows". Opening the drop and read app does give windows but no way to create prefs or anything that I can see.

I called readers North America 800-4474744. I believe the corporate office European number is also on the order confirmation. First the person said one couldn't do ocr automatically because you have to draw the zones; I pointed out that in version 11 we did it automatically. Then the person went to prove to me that the app would open find which it did--until I had him turn on voiceover. Once he got rid of his prefs and tried to open it he admitted that voiceover wasn't seeing the window. He tried to tell me that if I just hit enter anyway I could hit enter on "ok" and the app would work but it didn't. Then he gave me a link to go to in safari to type in and hit enter. I had to type my name and enter a room but I got empty html though his end showed me in the room. All of this belabors the point if they've taken away the automatic functionality which I couldn't determine for sure. He then offered a refund and anted to send me an email with a pdf form to fill out; having done this with Carla once I remembered what pain this was so I refused and said he could take my information over the phone. He took my order number and card number so I should get a refund.

If you want to try to see if this version works, you could try turning off vo and getting a sighted person to hit the ok button and then see if it can be set up the way version 11 was. I left version 11 installed when I installed 12 and 11 still works for me; the preferences folder is specific to version so you can apparently have more than one version on your system without a problem. I don't have a sighted person to help me at this point and also just have the adaptor to make my mini seem like it has a monitor so I would have needed to go looking for a display of some kind to hook up temporarily even if I could have found sighted help. If you do decide to get sighted help and do this, please post whether it is useable once you have done this.

I know the North America office has had calls from blind people before so I let this tech support person know that I was appreciative of his help but very disappointed that apparently absolutely no thought was given to the accessibility of this app. I asked him to pass on this information appropriately but will also probably send in a complaint. I told him I didn't want to be trapped indefinitely on an outdated version and certainly wouldn't be recommending readers to anybody until this issue is addressed.
