[macvoiceover] The sad state of DAISY playback on Mac

OK here is the status for Mac Daisy playback, it's not good I fear.

Katieplayer is dead they do not answer phones, email or anything. There is no reply for support and while it is still possible to order the software online it will not authenticate on Intel macs and no one will answer support emails any linger. All attempts to contact them via every known email address has failed the phone is disconnected I even had someone go by their office in N.J. which is closed and abandoned. Joe Woodill used to be on these lists but doesn't seem to be any longer.

VictorSoft for Mac is for sale at $129 from RFBD but you must be an RFBD member to get it. It will play only DAISY 2.02 books.

What needs to be done, and done quickly!

We need DAISY playback as part of the OS. The same way that DVD and Audio CD are now so that when you insert a DAISY CD, or pen drive the player will appear. The player should be able to take keys from RFBD or the NLS or whoever to play encrypted books, but first let's get the basic player working with the three different kinds of DIAISY (2.02, 2002, 2005)

Let's get the VoiceOver, Mac101 and other documentation in DAISY format and ship that with the OS.

Let's do all this BEFORE Microsoft does. Let's have the first DAISY compatible OS

Next up would be Daisy playback in iPods. The iPod has a user interface which would be ideal for DAISY. DAISY playback in iPod would be vastly superior to any current audio book system now in use.

OK I'll get off my soapbox now.
