Just before seeing your note, I remembered the VO+F2 commands and there was my solution.

Thanks for the help, I appreciate the help a lot.

also try vo keys-f2 quickly.

and did you try command-w to close the window? You may have to try
rebuilding the mailbox and also, try changing the message to plain text.

Hi,

This brought up the expected dialogue but when I pressed the "bounce" button the dialogue disappeared but the message I can't get to close remains on the
screen, presumably not bounced.

What was the keystroke to find dialogues that my be around that don't get focus properly? I think I had to use it in another application a week or two ago but can't remember which one it was when I went to help and read the
command list.

bry command-b and then answer ok. that will bounce the message back to the
sender and put it in the trash.

Hi,

Today I was happily reading my email until a strange situation involving what seems to be a single email start to happen. I opened the message, read
its contents and tried to delete it. Deleting didn't work with the
keystroke, going to the toolbar and choosing delete or hitting the close button. When I tried to shut down, I got an error that said I had to force
quit mail first so I did and it restarted.

I restarted Mail after it rebooted and was faced with the same email and the same "no way out" state. I tried a few more times to shut down and do a few other things but, alas, all has done nothing but leave me with Mail broken.

Any ideas?

I had to use my Windows laptop to do this email.
