[macvoiceover] Selecting noncontiguous files

I once did this successfully but continually fail.
1. I turn cursor tracking off.
2. I hit escape
3. I go to my first file and hit command and spacebar. (or is it the VO keys
plus command spacebar)?
4. Move to the next file I wish to select, and only the most recently selected
appears when I press VO-F6.
Any help greatly appreciated.
