I can try it.
Unfortunately I had to uninstall the scanner's driver to run scanimage and tesseract so I'd have to reinstall it which is really not that difficult.
Btw Greg sent me a tiff file he couldn't open with tesseract and it opened fine for me both on my linux machine and on the Mac. So I think we still don't know what the defining vareiable might have been that caused failure for him and success for me. 

Will at least take a look at this other solution; thanks.
