You can actually change the settings so that you don't have to hear all that
junk.  (I had the same problem.)  I believe that you can go into preferences
and set which of the mail properties you'd like to see displayed--from, to,
subject, etc.

When I tried apple mail I had to listen to a lot of nonsense before each 
mail message in the list of messages; not my cuppa tea. smile
Maybe an update will fix it or maybe I did something wrong, no idea. When I 
get a mac I'll give it another whirl.
