Hi Sara, I wonder if this has to do with snow leopard launching in to the
desk top window rather than the finder window the way leopard does, and if
using command accent will get you back to the area where you can see your hard
drive again.

the checkbox for showing the hard disc on the desktop is in finder
preferences.

Everything still works and I am typing this from my VM with windows xp.
I haven't tried Safari or anything else yet.
