This is great but I set up my account before reading it. In windows,
I always used to set stuff like this up so your instructions were no
surprise to me but what was a pleasant surprise was how easy it was to
do. There are also things you can do under view to perhaps make the
experience less cluttered.
Now to find someone to chat with.

In this message are instructions to set up i Chat in Leopard to hear
chat invitations spoken automatically, even if you are in another
application and to hear incoming chat messages spoken automatically.
In iChat preferences under the Alerts tab , from the Event pop-up
button choose Text Invitation and check the box Announce when Event
occurs
When you receive a text chat invitation Voiceover will announce the
Buddy name of the person attempting to contact you and also the
person's first message even if you are working in some other
application.
At this point, you will need to go back into iChat, use the Window
Chooser menu and choose the window that says Chat with and then the
Buddy name
To hear the Buddy name of a person inviting you to an audio chat or
video chat, do the following:
In iChat preferences under the Alerts tab, from the Event pop-up
button choose either Audio Invitation or Video Invitation and check
the box Announce when Event occurs. You can do both of these, but you
must do Audio and Video separately. Voiceover will announce the name
of the person inviting you to audio chat or video chat, even if you
are working in another application.
To accept the invitation go to the Window menu and choose the Buddy
name at the bottom. You will be presented with a list of buttons and
one of those buttons is marked Accept.
To hear your subsequent incoming iChat messages spoken automatically,
do the following:
In iChat preferences under the Alerts Tab choose Message Received
from the event pop-up button and then check the Play Sound check box
and the Bounce Icon in Dock check box and the Announce when Event
Occurs check box
It works and it works quite nicely.
