Yes, Microsoft Messenger doesn't work well at all, and if you upgraded to Safari4 you won't be able to type at all. The only way I found to do that is to command+tab out of the application and then come back. It will let you type once, but once you send the message you will need to repeat the thing again... Just use Adium...
