the difference though is that the headset that accompanies the iphone has a mike and controlls that you cannot replicate for it anywhere else.

According to the documentation and my experience, it's a 3.5mm jack.

Hi. Does the Iphone let you use standard walkman earbuds or do you need to
use something with a proprietary plug? Thanks.

I'm not sure what you mean by "actual work". Like any new
device, it takes getting used to and using it. In doing so, you find
ways of getting tasks done. At this stage, those of us who have
iPhones are learning and exploring and becoming confident and
proficient with them. I'm going to try this shortly, but I think one
can check weather and make appointments while on a call.
Additionally, I have no idea why a big deal is being made about using
a headset. The earphones that come with the iPhone are not at all
clumsy or awkward. Also, as has been mentioned, there are other ways
around the issue of the screen being locked during a call, which, as
far as I can tell, has not slowed the rate of sales of the device in
the market place.

My best friend is now the proud owner of an iPhone, and she loves

can't imagine doing what I would call actual work with the iPhone.
However, I could be wrong and only time will tell.

Hmm. That's a real minus. I never use a headset with my phone.

No: they expect you to use the iPhone with it's headset That's all.
Because then you have access to the phone's full functionality, e.g.
adding an appointment to the calendar, then coming back to the phone
app etc.

So I guess Apple isn't perfect after all. They do have their
