Hi Ron,

Good to meet you.

Check out the links, guides and such on
www.icanworkthisthing.com
under, MAC with Voiceover.

As you may know, Itunes works quite well with the new Itunes upgrade.

Your new website sounds like fun, sounds like you have some good choices for names.

I have been a MAC with Voiceover user for nearly 2 years and I haven't used Windows in a long time. Every week it seems there is something new that will work with Voiceover. I have found no limitations by switching to the MAC. If you are looking for something special, sing out and lets see if we can findit.

Lots of friendly folks on this list who know a good deal about Voiceover. So remember, you are welcome here.

Hi fellow listers!

This is Ron Johnson, writing from the little town of Salem, SD.

I'm currently running an iMac G5, (purchased the day Tiger was released - April 29th, 2005), and, for the most-part, have been enjoying using it, OS X, and VoiceOver!

I think Apple did a wonderful job, for a first-run screen reader, but compared to the others out there, VoiceOver is still quite lacking. My hope is, that Apple will make substantive changes to VoiceOver, over the years. I know this has been a big concern of blind Windows users, contemplating switching to Macs. They're worried that Apple doesn't have the commitment to continue developing VoiceOver. My concern is that, plus that not enough developers are taking VoiceOver seriously (i.e. Apple with iTunes, Roxio wwith Toast, etc).

I've been working, on and off, over the last couple of years, on a website, dedicated entirely to VoiceOver, and the VoiceOver community. Haven't decided what to formally call it. Tentatively, I'm calling it VC-Talk - VoiceOver-Community Talk, but I wasn't sure if I should use that, or pick something different. Also, haven't decided on whether, or not, the site should be a '.com', '.org', '.net', or '.info', but I'm leaning toward the latter. The primary objective of this site will be to list all the known accessible applications, allow users to submit info on new apps they've found, and provide all VoiceOver-related resources, & links. The site also has an "Acknowledgements" page, where I'd like to list all persons/groups, who contributed to the development of VoiceOver - Developers, persons who participated in the Spoken Interface Preview, and the like. My biggest problem, right now, is not being able to host the site on my own server, a Blueberry, 333 MHz iMac G3. I have all the CGI scripts I need, plus a web, mail & FTP server - just no way, at this time, to access it from the outside world!

I should get back to working on it, find a place to host it, etc, as I feel that it would be a valuable resource to all of us VoiceOver users, and to those PC users, wishing to make the switch to a Mac. Any suggestions for a name, or a Mac-friendly, preferably free hosting provider, etc, would be greatly appreciated! Also, I'm always on the lookout for any VoiceOver- compliant applications, that I don't already know about.

Thank you for taking the time to read this message, and I look forward to participating in the discussions on this list, and contributing, what I can, to helping others get the most out of VoiceOver, and their Macs! I'm sure, along the way, I'll learn a thing, or three! LOL :-)

Take care!

Ron J.
