Jacob and Travis, excellent points, All!
Might I suggest not only writing to Apple but also perhaps some
editorial comments to the news organizations whom covered this?…
Please forgive the OT below, but I'm not sure how to respond to
this without being sort of OT. So for those not interested, please
feel free to delete, as I respond…
I think the timing of this is seriously passive aggressive! I
can't help but feel as if the NFB is trying to 'horn in' a bit on
Apple's on-going efforts as it were.
I find it odd that the same people who shouted about wanting Apple
to fail are now, seemingly, trying to take credit as having a hand in
what Apple has been working toward over the past few years. I find
this blatantly disgusting and it makes me ashamed to be a part of this
so-called community.
If the NFB felt they needed to save face, so to speak, there are
other friendlier ways of doing so, but as it is, this sort of behavior
only serves to distance the 'blind' from the 'sighted' in my opinion.
As has been said, if I were doing something that I felt was
important / helpful for a community and was treated like Apple is
being treated now, all I'd want to do is run the other way as fast as
possible. -And, for myself, I'd just like to add that I *have* seen
this behavior from blind people before, on the microcosmic level, in
the day-to-day, in the way some treat sighted people whom are trying
honestly to understand their situation or humbly help them out with
something. Again, I say that I feel this behavior is disgraceful and
destructive.
I do understand that as VI people, we're not saints, <smile> and
nor should we be expected to be, but there is a sense of common
decency that I feel some of us are blind to much of the time. This,
in my opinion, is one of those situations. And, I personally feel
that one way of repairing this sort of thing is simply to editorialize
and get other sides of this issue heard both for ourselves, and for
Apple / the community as a whole, so that the picture of true users is
clear.
I do hope this made sense, and I wish all of you a great day!…
Smiles,
Cara :)

Oh come on, as if we could've expected anything different from that
belligerent cult. This isn't itself a stunt, per se, it's the result
of crap the NFB has already pulled and them having to basically
swallow their own waste. I bet it didn't taste good, and burned
going down to boot. This cooperative agreement was about the only
thing they could have done to save face, still I'm not sure why
Apple even bothered with them. The best we can hope for is that
they're out of the way after this, though somehow I doubt it. Let's
just hope they don't have a negative impact on Voiceover--not sure
about the rest of you, but I for one don't want to see Jaws for Mac
and all the rest of the political baggage that would bring. And I
have a guess at how much of that funding will be put to productive
use and, judging by the tone of your message, I think our guesses
are exactly the same.
We should probably write to Apple and explain that some of us are
actually grateful and respect them for what they've been doing. I
don't get it, for the first time we have one of the biggest computer
companies in the world going out of their way to feature
accessibility and with an obvious commitment to it. And then they
get idiots like the NFB, who are upset because Apple is shaking
things up. They obviously want accessibility only on their terms,
not accessibility in general, but that isn't surprising I suppose,
it's sad though. I think we should let them know that there's a
growing user base that actually applauds what they've done and
aren't ingrates about it.

Apple was doing just fine on their own, there was no need for this

Not to mention, that 250 thousand dollars could have been used by
apple to make several products accessible instead of tossing it at
some belligerent organization that is so sue happy.
Anybody want to take a guess at exactly how much of that money is
actually going to be spent on purchasing equipment or training for
the blind?
It's things like this that make companies not want to help us.
When someone is already working to make things accessible, then
something like this happens, It's no wonder there's so much
inaccessible software, if I was treated this way I'd certainly not
go out of my to make things work for the group who did that to me.
If I'm already working to make something work for a particular
group, then that group comes back and pulls a stunt like this, I'd
be a whole lot less inclined to offer that group assistance in the
future.
