[macvoiceover] Re: Face Book and VO?

Hello Chris and all:

Thought I would drop in on this thread. Yes, I am one of those users who ... yes ... uses both the regular and mobile sites for facebook.. I am not a masochist nor overwhelmingly talented. It does require a little bit of suspension of belief in order to get the hang of it.

A few pointers which I am sure you already know and have thought of though they proved to be helpful to me:

1. Play around with it in both group mode and dom navigation. There are some things that cannot be seen in one and some in the other. After a few goes at it you begin to get the hang of it.

2. Depending upon what it is you wish to do using the VO U command will assist greatly

3. Drawing upon number 2, the VO I item chooser will become your best friend if the goal is to respond to email. It is the only reliable way to locate the edit fields to send or reply to messages. I mention this because you cannot always view certain things on the mobile site that you can see on the full site ... such as ... if a friend thinks you should befriend someone else that contact request may not show up on the mobile site.

4. On some features of facebook both on the mobile site and the full site certain things may not appear until the function actually happens. For example, someone might write on your wall or comment on your status. The word comment appears and if you click on it an edit field appears. You write what it is you want to say though how do you post it? On the full site tabbing brings you to a post button which ... heeheehee ... was not there a second ago (mmmm). There are other places where this sort of thing occurs. It is disorienting to be expecting something to say button for example and it is just a word until you click on it and then ... it becomes more than a word (smile).

Photos can be covered in the next post (grin). OH, and if you want to post anything to your page, the iphone works tremendously well. Posted my first article to my page and was thrilled beyond belief (wuhu).

Be well.

Hopefully some of this information will prove useful to you. Let us know.

Thanks to both Marcy and Keith for their tremendously quick answers. Over the years, I've steered a lot of people to mobile sites because they tend to be easier on the ear; of course, when I have an issue, I forget my own advice as I am still a bit in the worlds between VO (all of my personal computing and some of my jwork), JAWS (typically only for comparison reasons) and orca (because a number of foriegn governments/my clients are paranoid about both MS and Apple embedding code in their proprietary operating systems to spy for the US. I also need to fiddle around with some other Windows screen readers again for comparison purposes.

I think that with VO coming with the OS, JAWS advances on sites like googledocs, the terrific and very powerful scripting facility in Window-Eyes, the large cash infusions being tossed at NVDA, the international acceptance of orca and the cost free System Access to Go (www.satogo.com - requires Windows) that we're enterring a very interesting and exciting time in this biz.

For the first time in years we are enjoying real competition to take on JAWS and FS is responding with some really cool stuff. I'm enjoying the Macintosh more and more each day and, after a year, I still feel like a beginner.

Happy Hacking,

Hi again Chris! Whoops! I just reread and realized you're already set up. Great! Now the rest on the mobile site will be easy! Marcy

Hi,

I sort of remember some chatter on this list about Face Book. My sister sent me an invitation to be her "friend" so I went ahead and set up an account.

I find the pages to be hard to navigate as they all seem to have a lot of junk at the top that VO doesn't jump passed and labels on some of the edit controls are obtuse or missing altogether as, presumedly, sighties can infer their meaning by context.

If anyone uses Face Book with VO and feels they do successfully, please help me out with a few pointers to get started.

Happy Hacking,
