If you have textedit 1.4 or later, doing a command-option-p will show
document properties, which includes word, character and paragraph
counts.
Of course, if you don't, then Greg's script will do the job, as will
the ones at softcon.com/mac, there's scripts there for word/character/
paragraph counts as well, and the apple scripter can combine /hack/
modify them as so desired.
Hope this helps.

DocInfo is an AppleScript application that will display a dialog
telling you how many charaters, words and paragraphs there are in
the front document of TextEdit. You can put this into your TextEdit
AppleScript directory or just run it as it is.
DocInfo is free and can be downloaded from:

Hope this solves the word count issue for people.
