Oh nuts! How to muddy the waters! Read before you send Cheryl! Let's try this 
again; sorry everybody!

On my MacBook Air, when using the built-in keyboard and interacted with the 
messages table, command-option up arrow and command-option down arrow work to 
move me from top to bottom of the mail list. Within the text of an actual email 
I can go to top or bottom of that email with command-up and command-down arrow. 
In System Preferences > keyboard the checkbox is checked for function keys to 
act as standard in case that matters.

I've checked what I've written this time!
