the doc is like a taskbar. it has icons for apps that are running, and you can pin your favorite apps to the doc to access them quickly. You can get to the doc with ctrl+F3 or control option D

you want to add selected, then simply type Command-Shift-T, you'll hear
your computer say "Add Item To Dock", and it should be there.
