it can be hard to learn a new opperating system. However, if you haven't
already done this, you need to decide what resources you are are going to
use for help. People on the list will try to help you and, in fact,
despite the fact that you said you had no replies to your requests for
help, I found several when I checked the list archives, so you may want to
make sure you are getting all of your email. But you won't learn the whole
opperating system just by writing to the list. So use the suggestions that
Keith and Suzanne have sent you. To access a link in mail, do
ctrl-option-space on the link but if that doesn't work you can always copy
and paste the link or if worst comes to worst, listen to it and type it
into voiceover by hand. If nothing else works, you can even type in the
google field; for instance typing i can work this thing in google does
bring up the icanworkthisthing website. This isn't at all suggest that you
shouldn't post to the list; I'm just letting you know that there are other
alternatives you can use instead of getting frustrated as you wait for
reponses that either don't come or don't seem to answer your question.
Remember also that you have help right within your system by using
control-option-h and selecting from the menu. when you learned windows you
must have had either a teacher or astrategy for learning; you may already
have this also for the Mac, but if not, you must either find a teacher or
strategies for learning or you will find yourself constantly comparing
your Mac experience, which is new, to your Windows experience, which is
familiar, and you will eventually give up on the Mac.
Besides learning voiceover, you also just need to learn basic Mac
concepts. Some of this is in the voiceover getting started manual and
maybe others can post links or resources that might help with this.
Sometimes reading material not written for the blind user takes some
translation because you will be told to "click on" things or "drag and
drop" items or do other things for which you will have to learn the
accessible alternative, but you do need to learn the basic concepts of
using applications and performing tasks on the Mac.
Also remember that the response you get to questions will be variable
because people on this list are busy doing other things and many right now
are busy getting adjusted to the new Lion OS. But usually someone does
eventually reply, and if not, it's all right to wait a while and then post
your question again. But the best way of keeping frustration to a minimum
is to find resources for help in addition to the list, which you already
may have done, but because you seem frustrated I just am reminding you.
Remember that the voiceover help menu and help within your applications
and the voiceover getting started guide and Google are great resources,
and they are resources that don't go to bed or get busy doing other
things, as people unfortunately do!!! Also don't forget the voiceover
quickstart tutorial (control-option-command-f8) which you probably have
already used but which does show you the basic techniques used in running
voiceover.
I'm not at all writing this to be condescending or lecturing or to suggest
that you shouldn't post here. I just believe that if you will make sure
you use all the resources available to you, you will be much more likely
to have a positive and productive experience with your Mac. Your Mac is
not a Windows machine; it may eventually become your system of choice or
you may find that you prefer doing some things on the mac and some on your
Windows computer. Either way, your Mac does have a lot to offer
once you get over the hump of learning the basics of your new system.
If you haven't yet found the answer to your dashboard question: when
in dashboard do control-option-f2 twice and you will be in the
dashboard menu; arrow down to the widget bar and right-arrow or hit
enter and you will see your list of widgets. In some cases, the first
time I did this i found no items but if I hit escape and repeated the
process, my list of widgets was there. The icanworkthisthing website
does have an article on dashboard use.
