I do not know if it is the only way to go about using it though it is
an excellent way to do so. If anyone you know has an aim account Ichat
will handle it well.
Adium may come in handy if you desire to keep all of your IM chats in
one program. I spread my contacts around because I use voice quite a
bit.
Hope that little ... very little (smile) ... bit of input proves useful.
