This is called quick look. It's turned on/off by using command-y. A very handy thing to have on when looking for that 1 mp3 in a folder full, but otherwise, I find it just irritating, and generally leave it turned off. Others have other opinions of course, and that's what makes the mac such a great machine, everyone can work however they like.
