hi;
is this in snow leopard, i can write 192.168.1.1 and it reads fine in leopard.

Just type in an IP address. Perhaps any IP address, but for argument's sake, type into any editable area:
192.168.1.1

At least on my machine, it doesn't read back anything close to correctly, unless you go through it character by character.
