Actually, clean refers to emptying cache folders and the like. When was the
last time you went to the safari menu in safari and executed the empty cache
command for instance?

I get an occasional safari busy on my macbook pro 13 inch with 8 mb of ram and
an 500 mb hd with a 2.6 ghz core two duo but more on my less powerful systems.
I have a good internet connection though most of the time.

Well absolutely. If I issue (left+right arrow) quicknav will not turn on. Yep
there just proved it. The thing about it is that I am describing a bug that I
constantly noticed in SL and associated with qn, since it started when apple
implemented qn, and since the qn short cut command would momentarily fix it.

When I come to think of it I never really had a very positive opinion of qn,
but on a more positive note, I have a macbook with small uncomfortable arrow
keys and it made qn feel really slow, but when I was using a desktop unit I
found that it worked a lot nicer and was actually a godsend with the windows
keyboard that had the option and command keys reversed.

My macbook is a 2008 model I think. It has a 320 gb hard drive apart from the
other specs mentioned. I remember you mentioned that a clean install can
sometimes be what the doctor ordered. It sure is a good idea, and I resorted to
it when I updated to SL. However in the end I noticed the exact same bugs even
after I had gone in the disk utility and erased my entire hard drive, doing a
clean install of SL over it. I think I'll try it again here perhaps some day,
but it just doesn't seem worth rushing into it, given the luck we have had with
it in the past.
