No, if it's not in the mac then you do literally have a copy of it on the
desktop as you initially stated.
Wow! That's bizarre! Again, I need to know more what you did and how you
went about importing the disc, as I have a very strong suspicion you just
copied the disc with command+C then pasted it where ever.
That definitely won't work for importing discs, if that's what you did.

I do that even though the CD is ejected and no longer in the Mac?
