Jenny,

Theoreticly, in Windows you should have gone to the system tray, and then to safely remove hardware, but no one these days does that. I! don't even do it. I should, but, I confess, I don't.

The bottom line is, yeah, the Mac indeed is way less forgiving about that, so try to be careful. If you do forget, don't pannick. It's not the end of the world, but just know if you do it enough, you may wind up having to repare the disk permissions, but, we'll cross that bridge later if we need to down the road.

Bottom line is, yeah, any time you insert a CD/DVD/flash drive/external drive etc. always always always do your best to remember to highlight it in the desktop, and then hit command+E to eject it.

Then! you can safely remove it.

Don't worry. I was where you're at at one point when I switched OS's. So, don't feel bad. These little quote unquote: quirks, will take some getting used to, but once you do, you'll remember them now like I do so second nature you won't even think about it. Don't be discouraged. You're doing a great job for what it's worth.

Chris.

that's good to know too.

I think I had seen that, but I had forgotten to eject it last time I used a USB drive, and my Mac was quick to tell me that I shouldn't do that.

Just another quirk of the Mac that I have to learn.

I have never had to eject before I just disconnected a USB drive before. Smile.

It's important to also note here, that any time you plug a USB flash drive or external hard drive, or say a firewire for that mind external hard drive in, it too will get mounted, until you eject and unmount it.

Jenny-

When you insert a cd in to the Mac, it appears on your finder/desktop as it
is a media in a declared removable media drive, (CD Drive)

Nope that's not what I did at all.

I just put the CD into the Mac, hoping it would play it, it asked me if I
wanted to import it into I tunes, I went to the yes box, clicked it, and
there you go.

I don't see it anymore on the desktop, so I guess when I took it out of the
Mac, it disappeared from the desktop.

thanks for all your help.

No, if it's not in the mac then you do literally have a copy of it on the
desktop as you initially stated.
Wow! That's bizarre! Again, I need to know more what you did and how you
went about importing the disc, as I have a very strong suspicion you just
copied the disc with command+C then pasted it where ever.

That definitely won't work for importing discs, if that's what you did.

I do that even though the CD is ejected and no longer in the Mac?

when you are sitting on it on the desktop, press command-e to eject it.

It's probably a simple answer, but I want to make sure I don't make a
mistake.

Thanks.
