I do have a iPad I have the ipad1 . I don't have any kind of overlay on it.
I been using IOS devices for about 3 years or so since the iPhone 3gs came
out. Hmm, that is about 2and half years. I will say the iPad having the
larger screen has a small learning curve from the iPhone because of the
screen size and it has like columns dividing the screen and sometimes tables
depending on what you are doing. I suggest a iPhone or iPod touch to start
with. But would wait till the new Iphone5 came out or the new iPod touch
came out which should be in the next month or two. These are much smaller
and easier to navigate. I use the iPad from time to time to keep in
practice with it but mostly my wife use it as she is a seeing person and
really likes the iPad. So do my seeing grand children . But I myself prefer
the smaller devices. They do everything the iPad does and much easier to
navigate. I don't have a iPod touch but when the new ones come out I will be
looking at them. Now the iPad unless you get the one with cell data you will
not have a built in GPS and will have to use a BT GPS receiver. Yes there
are brail displays that work with all IOS devices. I myself don't use
brail. HTH

Subject: [mac4theblind] Using an ipad

Hi to all

Today, I went to an apple store and held an ipad in my hands for the first
time. Amazing, it's much thinner than I thought. The guy there activated
voice over.

However I found it rather difficult to do things with all this touching and
wiping. Most of all locating some things on the plain glass screen. And some
funny things happened like the ipod suddenly playing music ...

Maybe I was shy or it was just an unlucky start for me. but anyway, I'm
wondering if you guys are really using an ipad or ipod touch for your daily
life? I read somewhere about a company which makes some tactile overlays for
blind people. Are you using something like that or are you really just
getting fine by figure out and memorizing all the spots on the glass screen?

I'm actually looking for a portable organizer. So I thought an ipad might be
an interesting solution since you could look at your appointmens sort of
like reading them in braille ... Do you guys organize your things this way?

And is there a certain braille display you would reccommend to use with
these devices?

Kind regards
Ben
