thank you Bob! That did the trick.
As for disabling VoiceOver on start up, you can reconfigure that if it
also gets reset, but it shouldn't. You never lose VoiceOver support
when resetting preferences. Even if you did, bring it right back up
with the keyboardshortcut command f5.
