A comprehensive test suite is certainly a must. This is the single
most important thing if the development is handed out from the
principal author of a software package to other people. This is even
more important than the documentation.

Over the years, lots of test cases have been posted to this list. So
even if you cannot get Mike's test suite because the license situation
is unclear, you could build a test suite from that (after asking each
poster if they are fine with the inclusion of their snippet). It's a
lot of boring work, but it doesn't require knowledge of LuaJIT
internals.
