Tenderness

It is the siren song, the Circe charm,
the drugged drink, the false alarm.
It is tenderness that ties the noose,
loads the revolver, lets hell break loose.
It is the lie of a million tongues.
It is the grease on the ladder's rungs.
It is the solvent that bonds the free.
It says, "Be false but tender to me."

Tenderly Lot's wife and Orpheus both look back.
Tenderly the heretic is chained to the rack.
Tenderly track marks score the withering arms.
Tenderly dull weeds choke the flowering charms.

When the antelope falls and its flesh is torn,
tender hyenas in low tones mourn.
