he front end/editor sucks as far as cutting and pasting goes

I haven't found that to be problematic...

it's gui, unnecessarily cumbersome... I just want a nice clear, text-only
browser (LIKE I HAVE ON MY ORDINARY MAIL PROGRAM)

Lack of any kind of mailbox creation/storing

You mean a mailbox storage on your fixed disk?

No, I mean, I cannot, as far as I know, create a mailbox/area/folder on
their server so I can sort all my mail from on person into that mailbox.
Right now, I have about 2000 emails all jumbled together in my 'inbox'. It's
a mess.

No spell checker

Boy, now I'm confused. When I compose an e-mail, I get an automatic
"alert" in the form of a red underscore when gmail doesn't recognize a word
-- right clicking gives me the option to choose among correctly spelled
words.

Well, mine doesn't do that. Wait, let's try and sepll a word wrong... nope,
no red underscore.

all the mail is on THEIR server.

Well, yeah.... but I'm thinking (I've only been using it for a couple
months) that there must be a back-up to fixed disk option.

Short of forwarding all the mail to myself (which is already what I do) I
don't know of one.

The beauty of its all being on THEIR server is you can access your mail
quickly and easily from any computer in the land.

which is exactly why I got a gmail account in the first place, but it's
HORRIBLE for my main mail client.

it requires me to go online just to read/compose/answer mail

<g> -- Some of us LIKE that! Hey -- I'm on-line already, w/ Mozilla,
looking at news websites, creating web-pages on eBay, calendering, etc. --
so if my e-mail is fully integrated with those functions, PLUS docs &
spreadsheets -- I'm thrilled. For example, if an e-mail I receive refers to
an appointment or function, I can choose to have it automatically loaded
into my google calendar. Everything in one streamlined place. (I'm
starting to sound like a commercial......)

yes you are... my point is that I can't NAVIGATE through my gmail unless I'm
online. That means, I can't write email on a plane or in a room that isn't
wired etc. That's a big pain in the a$$.

the way it layers subject threads

Hmmm.....the expand all etc. options make it fairly easy to get the
display mode the way you like it ....

The way I would like it is if 50% of the screen wasn't white.

the tremendous waste of screen space from browser crap, ads, news gmail
front end etc.

We are talking about Google Mail, aren't we??

www.gmail.com whatever that is.

It's certainly not perfect, but from some of the above I would swear we're
using two different things.

using it differently obviously, but no matter how 'user-friendly' it is, I'm
not your average user and I am ONLY using it semi-regularly so I can
participate in Lit-Ideas. As it is, this particular email took me at least
5 minutes longer to compose than it would have had I done it in my regular
mail client. And there are still probably mistakes in it.
