[lit-ideas] Re: for those who are into hypotheticals

I'd agree.

Rice was kicked out of Lebanon this morning (the Lebanese prime minister said she is "no longer welcome") because the Lebanon see that the US continues to supply Israel with weapons/money and refuses to stop Israel, in fact, condoning Israel's actions as "defense".

By calling Hezbollah part of the war on terror, Bush can't back down. Any sensible US politician would have stayed above the fight and worked with both sides, using the superior assets of the USA.

The Middle East, or, better said, the Arab world has changed in the last three months. After the failure in Iraq, the USA is no longer the dominant power in the region. They have vastly superior military power, but they are unable to assert control. It would have been unthinkable for the last 75 years that the US Secretary of State could be thrown out of anywhere.

Yesterday's announcement of massive US weapons sales to Arab states is preparation to protect those states against Iran and jihad.

If any one of those states, such as Egypt or Saudi Arabia collapses in internal revolt, this may trigger widespread revolts in the other states. Then we'll have an Islamic jihad stretching from Egypt to Pakistan. They will control 60-70% of the world's oil. They won't need to fire a single shot at Israel, they'll simply threaten a global oil embargo or switch from dollars to Euros. Either will be devastating to the US economy. For just how many days will Americans accept $10-per-gallon gasoline and rationing cards?

It's certain that there are no plans by the US and Israel to be able to deal with such a world. The entire current strategy will be useless.

My answer (after thinking for 6 seconds) is yes, certainly.
I'll have to think longer to tease out all the reasons, but surely Gore (or almost anyone else) would have reigned in Israel and demanded a ceasefire weeks ago. The Bush regime, instead, sends them more and better bombs and cries crocodile tears over the carnage. I can't think of a more morally bankrupt administration. Oh for the days of the "Teapot Dome Scandal." Or the tell-all spots on the navy blue dress. Ursula

Had Bush not been re "elected" in 2004, or "elected" in 2000, would that have made any difference in the Israel/Hezbollah/Lebanon situation today?
