I wrote
In 1987 Craig Reynolds began to create computer models of this
behaviour, in which entities he called 'boids,' do the maneuvering.

The boids project is of course part of the study of artificial
intelligence. It has nothing to do with creating life.
I mentioned a site with lots of information about herding dogs, i.e.,
dogs that herd, but said I'd lost its address. Here it is.
