Isn't it very curious, then, that something over 80% of Iranians
interviewed by the BBC say clearly, in terms that would, it seems, be
perfectly acceptable from people in other countries that they have
nuclear-armed countries next door in several directions and have as
much right to nuclear energy as anyone else. It seems to make perfect
sense to them, and I cannot say that, were I Iranian, I would
disagree. If India and Pakistan, Russia, China, the UK and France and
the USA, which threatens us with military force, can all have nuclear
weapons, why can't we?

Why not? It's risky. But so was living with a nuclear armed Stalin and
Mao. I'm not saying that it's comfortable. But MAD worked once. Why
shouldn't it work again?

But I do see what you are saying. With religious zealots on both sides
and no shortage of frightened warmongers to cheer them on, the chances
of a very great evil are rising. When the trains have collided,
perhaps those who survive the wreck will have learned something.
