Obviously "we" are not exactly like "them".  But the usual claim is
not simply that we are marginally better but that we are superior by a
long way.  So we should not even imply that wrongdoing by us is
minimal in the light of their wrongdoing.  "But I only tortured ten
people, X tortured one hundred", "But I only killed 100 civilians, X
killed one thousand" is not an acceptable defence.

(Nor, I add, is it
normally used as a defence; it's used as a snipe against anyone who
objects to torture and to the killing of civilians.)

1.  we all know about Saddam, it should not be necessary for posters
here concerned about current violence in Iraq to add a disclaimer to
every post saying they are aware of Saddam's mass murders.
