It's in the April 16, 2007 issue of the New Yorker. Unfortunately,
it's not on line. They only have a slide show of pictures, which is
like having nothing at all. The article is called, "The
Interpreter: The puzzling language of an Amazon tribe". The
library probably has it.
I have the issue but haven't read it yet. (Is this twittering?)
There's a letter in response to it in the most recent issue from three
linguists--one at Harvard, one at MIT, and one at Universidade
Estadual de Campinas, in Brazil--who claim that '[there is] much that
[is] interesting about Piraha,' (the language in question), 'but
virtually every point [of alleged uniqueness] turned out to have
precedents in languages spoken in cultures that have none of the
features attributed to the Piraha. We concluded that the Piraha
language actually demonstrates a striking _independence_ of culture
and language.'
There should be a ~ above the last 'a' in Piraha, but I can't manage
to get one to stay there.
