Well, I see I didn't convince Andy that psychology is just another religion.
That's OK, I'm not anti-religious unless religious people try to push theirs
on me. Then I get my back up. I was arguing with a really bright friend of
mine last night about intelligent design. He couldn't believe that all this
could just happen happenstancely. I argued that it didn't happen
happenstancely, it happened according to the laws of physics. He said yes,
but who made those laws? I said I didn't know, but if it was by design then
the designer is an idiot. I mean, like, the whole fucking thing's designed
to fall apart. Entropy and all that jazz. And what's with this 'life
feeds on life' crap? What genius thought that up? Oh, wait, God! As my
main character says again and again: "We're creatures of an incompetent God,
and there's nothing we can do about it." Such is life. But in truth -- or
what we call truth -- I have a great deal of respect for religion. Every
culture has developed a religion to account for life and things that go bump
in the night. There have been thousands of cultures and thousands of
religions. Of the plethora of current choices available to me, I prefer
Lackadaisical Taoism, as perhaps practiced in Memphis -- perhaps by me. It
suits me. It has no tenets except a nod to the on-goingness of thinginess.
Sometimes I'm in tune with it, but usually not. So, who cares? Not the
universe. I love my religion because it gives me comfort. I know I'm not
responsible for this really, really, hugely stupendous fuck-up -- not like
George Bush is responsible for....ach! There I go again. Actually my
religion tells me to forgive the stupid, fascist, greed-driven,
war-mongering bastard. He, like me, is just a leaf fallen into a stream.
Yeah, but his stream is from hell!! Calm, calm. The flow, you know, the
flow, it goes, he, like me, will end in the sea. Spirituality, stupidity,
they're all the same to the sea.

I've never been a society, so I wouldn't know.
Well, I have been a society, so I do know.
