I wonder to what extent the success of Crouching Tiger and similar
films depends on an audience accustomed to extreme special effects,
partly through video games and partly through such films and TV
programs as Superman, Spiderman, X-men, Matrix, Kill Bill, etc. Even
Buffy the Vampire Slayer....

But these are Chinese movies, not American movies. It's only recently that Chinese have had all the electronic toys and video games.

"Kung Fu Hustle" is quite fun. It's a Daffy Duck parody of kung fu movies. "Crouching Tiger" is epic in scope. The Jackie Chan movies are best understood if you really know Buster Keaton's movies.
