We're back from the Bay area, where on the streets banners hung, advertising a slow food festival. People there seemed either dirt poor or thin and rich and hip. In Marin I saw a woman ask a waiter to seat her, a process that required a stack of ironed napkins. She placed six across the clean wooden seat and folded a further two so that they lay underneath her thighs, in line with the legs of her beige trousers. Who knows why? One door down, a store announced that twelve dollar manicures come with complimentary white sugar exfoliations. Not brown. Somewhere on Geary street we passed Gary's store--the website says it's "a permanent garage sale"--which is called "Gary on Geary." Now I'm weary from the journey. And content to have come home.
