I've never been able to comprehend this putative distinction that people so
often draw. What sort of "academic literature" in this area would not have
practical relevance to ""real-life"" situations? (Whatever the latter term may
mean.)
Would the study, say, of Kant's moral theory be simply a matter of learning
"academic literature" while teachers' practical experience in the public
schools of a constitutional democracy is "real-life"?? Is it not the case that
one's capacities for practical experience, and for mature judgement, are
dependent upon an "academic" understanding of fundamental concepts, norms
principles, and procedures of deliberation that are necessary for the
possibility of more refined and sophisticated personal and professional
experience? (Surely nobody today really believes that all understanding
originates in experience.)
Off to some real-life academic inquiry and debate at the Congress of Humanities
and Social Sciences in Saskatoon. (I'll be engaged in other learning activities
as well, of course.)
