POPEYE'S PERCEPTIONS

There are poems of truly precious perception,
that make me feel somehow raised above
who I previously was.

That's the kind of poet I long to be,
but I'm stuck with this
rooftop, barbaric yawlping
sensibility.

God has his Modus Dei
(the title of my great novel, by the way --
not to be confused with Opus Dei)
Let's just say,
my poems are rants.
I am the Terrence of stupid stuff
full of cant that I can't recant
without violating who I am,
I yam what I yam,
the Popeye of poetry.
