Last night i thoughtfully opened the front door and threw my apple core out onto the lawn rather than depositing it in the receptacle for material to be composted. This morning while listening to Gustav Holst's 'In Bleak Midwinter' I am watching a blackbird enjoy a no doubt much-needed breakfast ....

"Was sind das für Zeiten, wo es fast ein Verbrechen ist über Bäume zu sprechen, denn das heißt Schweigen über so viele Untaten." - Bertolt Brecht (Oh what times - in which talking of trees [to say nothing of birds] is almost criminal, because it entails holding one's tongue about so many atrocities.)
