I've always thought that the vituperation was rather caused by mutual
understanding of the political views proffered. 

Perhaps it is indeed the case that neither politics, nor religion nor sexual
appetites should be permitted past the walls of the academy. Only those of a
mathematical or moral disposition need apply.
