Anticipating next summer's new round of "We've never 'ad it so 'ot,"
headlines, I give you, from preparation for tomorrow's class, Manet's
first visit to London in the last week of July 1868. On July 21 the
temperature in London was 101 degrees. The "Illustrated London News"
explained, "We are not used to being roasted, melted, exhaled, and most
of us find a dash of unpleasantness in the process. "The Times"
reported advice on how to keep cool: drink your tea cold and wear wet
cabbage leaf under your hat.
