...the first Metropolitan police force in London was brought about through the Parliamentary efforts of one Robert Peel. The police were also called 'peelers,' but this seems now an epithet whose use is now mostly confined to the underworld, if the dialogue in the British mysteries I fall asleep reading is any guide.
