David: Low flying plane, avoiding attack, ploughs
into the sea?
A knowledgable (non-List) friend of mine commented:
_____
actually, he was flying the unarmed F-5A photo
recon version of the P-38, probably a clapped out
hand-me-down from the AAF ... he should
theoretically have had a speed and altitude
advantage since those recon models were generally
stripped down ... he was supposedly notorious for
using more of his high altitude oxygen supply than
other pilots in his unit (that old age showing?)
while on a mission, so he might have descended to
a lower altitude for a gaulois (sp?) ... I've
heard the Messerschmitt version, but the Osprey
monograph on French WWII aces has him shot down by
two pre-production long nose FWs ... quien sabe?
... outtahere
_____
Best to all,
Eric
