Among said presents was a box of 'stuff' from which to produce a collection of Roses which, so said the packaging, could be named by the owner.
On said beach the mad dog engaged the waves in a chase that had her charging back and forth biting and snapping at each breaking wave. Cuz she's mad!
You can see it here: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=50.264018,-3.861855&spn=0.003704,0.012317&t=h&z=17 But not the dog!Meanwhile, just up the coast, is a newly built surfers' hut that you can see in the centre of this link:
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=50.276903,-3.878871&spn=0.001851,0.006158&t=h&z=18When they were building the hut, arhcaeologists discovered a large collection of Byzantian pottery similar to that found at Tintagel. What this suggests is a trading centre and necessary docks dating to the fifth and sixth centuries AD and, quite possibly, a now silted up inlet that you might be able to trace to the east of the hut. Those with a more aesthetic bent can zoom out and look at the whole estuary flanked by Burgh Island, a name that derives from an Anglo Saxon that means fort or defensive enclosure.
With thanks to Veronica for the encouragement, SimonOffered for those who don't wish to spend half a day pondering the latest philosphical conundrum.

Hi everyone,Thanks for great wishes and responses to our ice bound state and my family. They came, they went all safely home now. I put the dinner on the table, what was left of it, after everyone cruised to the kitchen to sample thingsto see if it was properly prepared, seasoned etc.The weather for Christmas Day was much better for driving. Even the sun wasout. What a treat! Thank you for the maps of where you are and where you were planning to go.Really interesting. Simon's that is. David's is literally incredible. And thank you Mike for that wonderful, lush language about the rose by Mary O. I will never think of a flower in the same way again. And Chris is gardening?Happy New Year to everyone. I hope relatives get here, since here is where Christmas dinner is. Assuming of course they don't get blown off the roads, since now we have high winds. Is it April yet? Didn't think so.On 25-Dec-08, at 2:47 AM, David Ritchie wrote:You're confused. April is National Poetry Month; this is National FrozenPea (or possibly pee) Month. And here in Kiel at 54º 19' 30" N (i.e., well north of Edmonton, Alberta) it is at 11 am 6º Celsius (43º Fahrenheit) - in the garden sprays of roses (only slightly wilted) hang on their bushes, mallow, bellflowers, fuchsia are still in bloom and the grass is green. Unlike the usual December slate-grey, the sky is actually bright, and we are forecast to see the sun tomorrow. Going out to do a little work in the garden on Christimas day (as opposed to flooding a rink that in my Winnipeg childhood every year replaced it) is indeed a novel thought ....
