Why don't some like it hot?

Impatience, as with most things American, impatience. Ready-to-eat means just that, no waiting, no savoring, no contemplation while food cools. Just eat and then football games, then sleep to wake early and shop.

Thanksgiving rates just after New Year's as my least favorite holidays, because the way it is often celebrated is all about impatience. New Years is celebrated in the ten seconds of countdown to year change, then comes anticlimax. Thanksgiving is celebrated in the few moments when the prospective meal is laid out on the table and the few moments of rapid eating.

A good antidote to these holidays: Milan Kundera's _Slowness_.
