Omar: I agree that it might be a good idea to
listen to what the Hamas actually says.
Eric: Part of the problem might be that people are
listening too closely.
Amusing to me at the moment is Hamas'
characterization of EU and USA withholding aid
(until Hamas renounces terrorism) as "blackmail."
Mr. Khalid Mish'al, in the article Omar cited,
calls the terms of this request, "humiliating
conditions."
This of course is answered by their own kind of
blackmail, namely "Unless you give us money, we'll
get it from Big Bad Old Iran and Saudi Arabia."
Mish'al goes on to suggest that Hamas has thrown
so many martyrs down the drain, they can't just
pack up their suicide belts now for a losing
proposition--such as peace, stability, national
sovereignty, and the prospect of economic
revitalization of the Palestinian lands.
Yep, it's going to be a long year I think.
