[lit-ideas] Re: OLD JOKES

I wonder what the numbers are for India. The culture seems so sexually warped. They are very priggish and prudish. No touching whatsoever. Always very proper. They act like middle-aged Brits. Marrying for love is deplored. Most marriages are arranged as a sort of business merger between families. Richard Gere kisses an actress on stage and tens of thousands of people riot in the streets in protest.

And yet... India has the highest rate of prostitution in the world. If the home is so strict and controlled, then people will find a surreptitious outlet for their desires.

It reminds me of Tennessee. Nashville has lots and lots of churches. Literally a church on every street corner, and often, two or three churches at an intersection, as common as gas stations. I've never seen a city with so many churches.

And I've also never seen a city with so many strip joints. Hundreds of them. It does make me wonder if there is an interplay going on.
