Because the alternative is ... all the nasties 
we think we're incapable of but instead are mired in.
Lately, "nice" people have been some of the nastiest. Santa Claus hasn't been sorting "naughty" from "nice" the way his contract stipulates, but has instead established an idiosyncratic, loose-cannon, kooky metric. Will check at the north pole and report back on that one.
